When I sold my iRobot Roomba Discovery, it was to a Chinese kid who was in to electrical engineering or something. He actually pulled it all apart and cleaned it properly (he told me about all the hair up in the gears). He emailed me back and told me that it “used to” crash in to things really hard, not drive properly, etc. He cleaned it well and it worked like new again (apparently). Was driving smooth, not bumping in to things as hard etc, he was really happy. I guess I never thought it wasn’t performing to its best, then again, I never actually saw it working, I always had it scheduled to clean while I was at work.

Anyway, the iRobot Roomba 500 series models are LOTS quieter, we can actually be in the room while its going on a Sunday afternoon. The Roomba 560 model also has the “smooth” bump technology built in (slows down when it goes to bump into something). The 500 series onboard scheduling is also great, no need to buy a separate scheduling remote ($120 more on the old Roomba). The new remote (optional) is actually really good. Old Roomba owners who are looking to upgrade might might think “I would never use it” I know I didn’t on the old model. However, this one is radio frequency (not IR, line of sight). Meaning you can be anywhere in the room and just hit the “Clean” button, and Roomba backs out to start cleaning, or even better, “Dock!” when he starts up on your day off. You can also steer Roomba properly. The old one was really hard to control via remote. The iRobot Roomba 500 series has a smooth and fluid control.

The new Lighthouses are also a lot better. They only come on when Roomba comes on (he radios out to them on start up) “Attention towers, where can’t I go today?” They instantly turn on, and then automatically switch off when Roomba returns to his home base to charge (this saves vital battery life on the lighthouses).
