Buy BBC Shop DVDs in Australia
June 25th, 2008
If you are a fan of any of the great shows and documentaries from the BBC then you will be glad to know that you can watch a wide range of DVDs that you can get from the BBC Shop right here in Australia.
All you have to do is purchase a DVD with a product reference number beginning with “bbcdvd” (the product ref number can be found under the “product info” tab). These DVDs have been dual coded to work on region 2 and 4 DVD players (Australia is Region 4).
So now you can order all of your favourite BBC shows directly from the BBC Shop: classics such as Doctor Who (new and old), Fawlty Towers and all of the BBC Jane Austen movies including Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility and Northanger Abbey; amazing documentaries from David Attenborough; and fantastic new tv boxsets such as Robin Hood, Torchwood and Top Gear. Their range doesn’t just cover DVDs, but more than 4,000 BBC and BBC related DVDs, videos, books and audio books.
And best of all, the BBC Shop now ships directly to Australia.

I have just ordered a box set of Gavin and Stacey direct from the bbc shop in the UK. I have had an awful feeling that I may not be able to watch the DVD if they are not the right code. Can you help???
Regards,
Diane

Hi Diane,
You should be able to watch them. I found 3 dvd sets for Gavin & Stacey on the BBC Shop and they all have product reference numbers that start with “bbcdvd”. This means that they are region 2 & 4 compatible.
To check the product ref look under the “Product Info” tab when you are on the dvd titles info page.
If you bought one of the following then you should be fine:
Gavin & Stacey: Series 1 & 2 Boxset (DVD) - Product Ref: bbcdvd2770
Gavin & Stacey: Series 1 (DVD) - Product Ref: bbcdvd2529
Gavin & Stacey: Series 2 (DVD) - Product Ref: bbcdvd2688

Have bought direct from the BBC a DVD of Ladies No 1 Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith, without being aware that it needed to be regionally acceptable.BBC shop have ignored both emails concerning this matter, where I admitted it was my fault, as I should have checked . Would have been nice just to have had an acknowledgement that they had received one or both of the emails.
Do not see that I can return the DVD as the packaging [ cellophane/shrink wrappping] is damaged; {query: how on earth can you return a item when their requirement is that the packaging has to be intact?]
Will send it to a relative in UK unless someone in Australia would like it, or can offer some suggestions.

Hi Sheila,
You should look in to buying a new DVD player. Take the DVD in to your local electronics store and ask to purchase the cheapest “Region Free” DVD player. I know Pioneer make their DVD systems all region free, and you can get a new player for about $100. Let us know how you go!
Thanks,

Thank you for the hint. We had another problem related to the DVD which caused me to call in the local TV guru. {looks abut 14, but is probably late 20’s}. He said there was nothing wrong with the DVD /VCR player except that we hadn’t used it enough[ the DVD player portion].
He is coming in tomorrow night [Wed 21st] to solve everything.[hope springs eternal]
He also said
a] The digital box can be converted to accept all codes for about $50. That is inclusive of him fixing the other problem, and installing the new HD digital box[ see point b]. Apparently anyone’s box [provided that it is a recognised make] can be converted
b] most digital boxes will start causing problems about the three year mark. On the basis of this, hvae purchased a new dig box with HD , and a universal remote
Will let you know how successful this is.
The retailer said that the manufacturer of the well known brand DVD/ VCR had stopped producing digital boxes because ” they are now incorporated into the new TV sets”.
then went on to say that individual components were going to be easier to reeplace in the short-mid term future, as opposed to buying a new TV with all the bells and whistles.
AND
I had done the right thing. This is music to an old girl’s ears!
ASo the moral of this story is, do not necessari9ly buy a new TVetc set
