Unboxing the iRobot Roomba 570 - The Cleaning Ninja

December 30th, 2007

Unboxing RoombaMy new Roomba 500 series arrived a couple of weeks ago and I am very keen to get the full review done. However, being Christmas and all it has been rather hectic but I want to do it properly with some nice videos too, so please be patient.

Anyway this is just a quick post to keep you keen too, so let me run through the unboxing of a new Roomba 570.

Unboxing the iRobot 570 Cleaning Ninja!

Roomba Box

This is the boring Roomba packaging. Unlike the Roomba 5250 (Discovery series) that I bought, this one came direct from iRobot USA, so it clearly does not require “retail presentation”. I imagine the retail version here in Australia is prettier.

Roomba User Manual

Opening the lid of the Roomba outer package reveals the user manual and warranty information card.

Inside the Roomba box

Inside the Roomba 570 box everything is packed safely and securely.

500 series remote control

The 500 series remote control unit that comes with the 560 and 570 model looks very similar to the interface on the actual Roomba itself.

Roomba 500 series Lighthouse

This is one of the two “Lighthouse” units that come with the Roomba 570.

Roomba Brush Cleaner

A new tool that comes with the 500 series this unique brush cleaner. I haven’t used it yet, but hopefully I will have serviced the Roomba for the full review. It looks a lot better than the Discovery series comb.

Roomba 500 Series Spare Brush Set

One of the “extras” that make up the 570 model is the additional brush set.

Roomba Charging Station

The black self-charging home base for the Roomba 500 series.

Roomba 500 Series Spare Filter

I believe the entire 500 series range comes with a spare filter, nothing too special here.

Roomba AC Adapter

The iRobot 500 Series charger comes in white, doesn’t look too hot with the 570 black charging station. I imagine the 530 model has a white charging station, all very Apple if you ask me.

Roomba Rubber Bumper Bar

This is the only part of the Roomba that doesn’t come attached straight out of the box. The Roomba rubber “bumper bar” pictured here is simply attached to the front of Roomba with the self adhesive tape included.

Roomba from the bottom

The underside of the new iRobot Roomba 570. Everything is pre-assembled, even the battery of the 500 series is “built in” you just have to pull some plastic tape out to expose the battery contacts and “he” is ready to charge and go!

iRobot Roomba 570

The all black Roomba 570, sexy isn’t it.

Roomba Comparison

Comparing the Roomba 570 with the Roomba 5250 Discovery Series. They are about the same size and same height, but the new iRobot Roomba 570 is beautiful.

Well that’s it, unboxing the new Roomba 500 series, the stunning all black 570 model. Hopefully within the next few days I will have the full review up with some exciting videos.

Ok, so I can’t wait for you review ;)

What sort of power adapter do you use for your new 570?

I’m currently considering ordering one from the US - it seems worth it considering the USD-AUD rate these days… but I’m worried about all the fuss you seem to have to go to just to get the appropriate power into it.

    Do you have a solution?

    Hi Taryn,

I have been a bit lazy and haven’t completed the full review yet. I strongly suggest buying one from USA as the AU distributor only gets the crappy 530 model in, and yeah the price is fantastic. Use eBay direct to AU or you can use a mail forwarder in the USA to order direct from iRobot.

I am actually using the old power supply from my 5250 series Roomba, it seems to work fine, it has the same / almost identical power output etc, so I gave it a go and it works.

You could try and pick one of those up second hand on eBay.com.au or maybe as a replacement part from the AU distributor, see www.salton.com.au, or try your local harvey norman or something.

You can also just use the one that comes with it if you go to Dick Smith / Jaycar Electronics etc, and buy a “step down transformer” so that you can feed the AU 240V into the US 110V adapter.

Hope this helps and good luck with the Roomba. Come back here and let me know about your purchase and experience with Roomba.

Great thanks. I’ll try ebay first for that spare. With some googling I found some web comments about step-down transformers too.

My mum lives in LA - so I have a convenient “mail forwarder”. ;)
Actually I’ve gotten her all interested now - I may even convince her to go for one too!

    Cheers and thanks,
    Taryn

Any more news on how the 570 performs ?

I am seriously considering ordering one of these beasties and would love to know the results of your weeks of arduous usage under harsh Australian conditions.

There are some rumblings on the intraweb that the gear box gets dust in it and melts down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQ1l8FikTwo), and that it has trouble with multiple room configurations (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2173799,00.asp)

    Cheers…

The 570 is awesome. I have been a bit lazy lately and haven’t had time or motivation to put up the full review. I strongly suggest you get the 570 model and not the 530. You will not be disappointed with the additional features, such as scheduling and remote control. I watched that gear box problem video a while ago, I am not sure if that is an issue now, however I don’t run mine on carpet (only wooden floors) so I probably don’t get as much fluff in it. My Roomba also has not problem with multi-room config.
