Playstation 3 - 40GB only $699*
October 6th, 2007
The new 40GB Playstation 3 is available in Australia from Thursday October 11, at an attractive RRP of only AUD$699.95. I don’t own a Playstation 3 but have considered purchasing one just to get the Blu-ray player. I’m sure there will be lots of kids sitting at home this school holiday break trying to talk Mum into it (at the lower price point). It certainly makes it a lot more attractive to me (only really wanting the Bluray, but may play an occasional game) but I can see a few of these cheaper units ending up under the Christmas tree.
The new, cheaper PS3 offers a smaller 40GB hard disc drive, only two USB 2.0 ports (instead of four) and excludes the multi memory card port. It still has all the regular power and features (Bluray etc) of the original 60GB, but it comes in under $700. It also lacks the backwards compatibility with older PS2 games, but the big cheese over at Sony Computer Entertainment think that’s ok because if you’re buying a PS3 this late, you probably don’t care.
The Playstation3 40GB comes with high definition Blu-ray disc player, SIXAXIS wireless controller, Wi-Fi and HDMI connectivity. It’s all powered by the Cell Broadband Engine, and with an ever-expanding line-up of game titles (we’ll hit 65 by Christmas) it should remain a popular option with the “late adopters”.
